The VFS Design-Build-Vertical Flight Competition
Student Experience to Fuel an Emerging Industry
We have seen the major developments happening in the eVTOL industry and all of the hype for Urban Air Mobility, but notice a major gap between the technology development in industry and the student development at universities. Our belief is that for true progress to be made, we as a community need to develop the hands-on skills and familiarization with technology at the student level to prepare the next generation of engineers that will push the limits of eVTOL technology.
This is why it has been our mission to create an annual intercollegiate design-build-fly competition. Target missions for the competition could change each year, ranging from Urban Air Mobility, Search & Rescue, Reconnaissance, Cargo Transport, MedEvac, and more.
Over the past two years we have been developing aircraft similar to what would participate in the competition to become familiar with the student involvement, team funding, and project timeline required to design a proper competition and to prove that new teams will be able to compete despite the challenges.
This spring, the Vertical Flight Society answered our call and have created the VFS Design-Build-Vertical Flight Competition. The inaugural competition is now live for the 2020-2021 academic year and MVFT will be a proud participant. The fly-off will be held by the competition host, Army Research Lab, in Grace's Quarters, Maryland on April 17, 2021. See you there!
