The VFS Design-Build-Vertical Flight Competition

Student Experience to Fuel an Emerging Industry

Our team was founded after observing the gap between the technology development in industry and the student development at universities for the major developments happening in the eVTOL industry and all of the hype for Urban Air Mobility. Our belief is that for true progress to be made, we as a community need to develop the hands-on skills and familiarization with technology at the student level to prepare the next generation of engineers that will push the limits of eVTOL technology.

This is one of our original missions as a team was to create an annual intercollegiate design-build-fly competition. Target missions for the competition could change each year, ranging from Urban Air Mobility, Search & Rescue, Reconnaissance, Cargo Transport, MedEvac, and more.

While working on this mission over our first couple of years, we had been developing aircraft similar to what would participate in the competition to become familiar with the student involvement, team funding, and project timeline required to design a proper competition and to prove that new teams will be able to compete despite the challenges.

In the spring of 2020, the Vertical Flight Society answered our call and have created the VFS Design-Build-Vertical Flight Competition. We were awarded first place in the inaugural competition (2020-2021) and are excited to be participating in the 2021-2022 competition.
